Walter W. and Alma Wachter purchased Glotfelty’s Garage (across the road from the current McHenry Post Office) and thus began Walt’s General Store. Half of the store was hardware and the other half groceries. They sold about everything. They put in refrigeration to handle meats and dairy products. Some of their items included groceries, hardware, sporting goods, hunting and fishing licenses, film processing, ice and picnic supplies, home baked goods, candy, novelties and souvenirs. One of their ads said, “If we don’t have it, we will get it for you. ”
